Elton John’s Farewell Concerts Came to Chicago, but Is This Really a Goodbye?

Elton John had his 50th concert in Chicago last Friday, and another one the next day, and fans are not sure whether to believe it was indeed a goodbye.

The Tour Started in 2018 and Was Postponed Because of the Pandemic

In a trend common to most great singers once they reach a certain age, saying goodbye to the stage and adoring crowds takes longer than anticipated, with both artists and older fans having difficulties letting go.

Nobody complains though, with fans old and young going to see their favorite artists over and over again, as long as that is still possible.

Elton John’s  “Farewell Yellow Brick Road” tour started in 2018, was postponed because of the pandemic, and now, as seen on his website, will continue through this year, to be done the second half of 2023. But the two shows he had in Chicago last weekend were not the first on this tour. In 2018, the Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour played the United Center; then Rosemont and Milwaukee in 2019. And if one might assume the two shows last weekend were indeed the last ones, according to The Tribune, Elton John will be playing Soldier Field in August.

Friday marked the 50th concert in Chicago for Elton John, in 52 years, the artist told the audience, reminding them of his electrifying American breakthrough in 1970. Back then, the musicians we now call classic rockers were young and retirement sounded at least far fetched if not  improbable. Rockers did not retire, they were supposed to die on stage, at least metaphorically.

Other Artists Have Announced Their Retirement and Came Back on Stage

Of course, there are no requirements regarding how long a farewell tour should be, or for it to really be the last one. Other artists have announced retirement, even tried it, and then came back to the stage. Fans never complained, as far as we know. The beloved Cher has had not one or two, but many farewell tours. Judas Priest said adieu at some point, but then decided that was not the case. In the early 80’s, The Who really talked about retiring, but then decided against it. 30 and some years ago, Ozzy Osbourne launched the No More Tours tour, followed by the Retirement Sucks Tour, and then by  the No More Tours 2 farewell tour.

Other musicians have no plans to retire, although they are seniors even among seniors. Back in 1988, Bob Dylan called his schedule “The Never Ending Tour”, and, basically, just kept on touring, which he does even to this day. According to his website, his current tour will end in 2024, when the artist will be 83. Tom Jones is touring Europe this year, with dates announced on his website until mid August.
